19th September 2008 - Inver Croft, Achnasheen

It seems we're properly into autumn now, and hill walking was the order of the day for this meet.

We arrived at the newly modernised Inver Croft on the Friday night. Despite all the recent rain, the walk in was pretty dry. Amongst other improvements, the hut now has a much bigger kitchen, electric light and a great new open fire in the main room. They've moved the front door though, which confused us for a while !

On Saturday, Lorna had a big discussion with herself about which of Moruisg & Sgurr nan Ceannaichean she had done on her previous trip. The hut book said one, but she was sure she'd done the other one. So, in due course she set off to climb the unclimbed hill. Unfortunately, arriving at the top, it all seemed rather familiar. She'd climbed the same hill again ! The weather wasn't very good at the tops and she wasn't keen on going over to the other hill. So she returned to the hut disappointed, and looking forward to next year's meet ... Rab and Dave did both of these hills from Criag, less eventfully. Colin & Ken biked up the track behind these hills, to do Sgurr Coinnich and Sgurr a'Chaorachain. On the way in they saw what looked like an otter. But it was well up the track, not close to a loch. Could it have been an otter ? Where's Ranger Ronnie when you need him ? After an adventurous crossing of the 2 wire bridge over the river, they made their way up the 2 hills. As Lorna found, the weather was pretty average on the top, they didn't hang around either. However, as they made their way back down, it did its usual trick of lifting the clouds off the tops. Ho-hum. A brilliant race down the track on the way out completed a fine day.

Sunday morning was livened up by a visit from 4 ladies from the Jacobites club. They looked around, made themselves a cup of coffee, and offered everyone a piece of home made cake. All huts should provide a cake service. Although I would have preferred chocolate rather than walnut.

Most folks lounged around for the morning and then headed off home. Colin & Ken went to Strathpeffer, to find the mountain bike trail. They found the trail well enough, but the map in Ken's little mtb book was as useless as ever. They biked up most of the descent, before finding some local riders who set them on the proper path. Once you find it, the track is great, well worth another visit. But take a proper map. Oh, and Colin got chased by a ghost ! See below.
