13th April 2007 - Wayfarer's Hut, Langdale, South Scotland

Global warming continues to give brilliant weather, and this weekend was no exception. A large gang headed down south to the Lake District with high hopes. Everyone was in fine spirits, Colin even shrugged off his latest injury and was kind enough to bring some margarine for everyone to share (see photo below). Let's hope he brings beer for everyone next time !

On Saturday, Kevin & Sheila headed off over various Pikes and Knotts towards Bowfell, followed some time later by Fiona. Neil & Colin ("an auld man and a cripple" in their own words) climbed Bowfell buttress. Pete & Christine went for a bimble. Gavin, Ally, Robert & Ken made the annual trip to Gimmer Crag. They found it absolutely mobbed, whoever says that people don't go climbing on mountain crags anymore should go to the Lake District on a sunny weekend. Gavin & Ally were on fine form, climbing 3 routes, ending with Gimmer String. Robert dragged Ken up The Crack, failing to mention that it's been upgraded since the guidebook they were using (1968 edition). Lucy, Dave & Javier arrived later, to meet Arthur & Mal. They headed up to Jack's Rake on Pavey Ark. Needless to say, everyone had an excellent day. Several folks returned to the hut via the pub. Mention must be made of the guitarist who was playing in the Stickle Barn on Saturday night - Paul Harrison - absolutely amazing !

It was pretty much a repeat performance on Sunday. Lucy, Dave & Javier headed off towards Bowfell. Neil as well. Fiona wasn't quite sure where she was going, but ended up doing a circuit which included Pavey Ark. Pete & Christine went up to Stickle Tarn. Kevin & Sheila went mountain biking at Grizedale. They came back complaining that there wasn't enough steep downhill stuff on it. Don't they know the steep stuff is dangerous ? Robert & Ken did Crescent Slab on a very crowded Pavey Ark. Colin went soloing at Raven crag (easy stuff he said). Gav & Ally were thinking of going to Borrowdale when they left the hut, but may have gone somewhere else ! As with Saturday, t-shirt, shorts & sunburn were the order of the day.

A fortunate few were staying down for a couple more days, and headed off for evening cragging at Scout Crag as the rest had to leave to drive home. Some of us have to work for a living, boo-hoo !
