28th April 2006 - Smiddy, Dundonell

This meet marked a welcome return from the Antarctic for Liz, who was straight back on form with the best key-faff for ages. Planning on arriving at Dundonell on Thursday, Liz arranged to have the hut key sent to her in Glasgow. Despite the fact that the key hadn't arrived on Thursday morning, she left Glasgow with Penny, convinced that there would be a key somewhere in the vicinity of the hut. There isn't. A cold night in an owl infested barn ensued for them. The key actually did arrive in Glasgow on Friday. Liz's flatmate was kind enough to get the train through to Edinburgh, to be met by Robert, who then passed the key on to Ken, who was leaving Edinburgh first. Hence, despite Liz's best efforts, we all got in the hut eventually.

There was also some mountaineering done. On Saturday, Matt, Chris & Monica went off to do An Teallach, they returned claiming "it's better than the Aonach Eagach", and who's to disagree ? Liz, Penny & Ken went to a rather distant Slioch. They were rewarded with the picturesque walk in along Loch Maree and great views of Torridon to the south & Fisherfield to the north. Lorna continued her Munro bagging quest, on two of the Fannaichs (Sgurr nan Clach Geala ?) Unfortunately, things didn't quite go according to plan ... you'll have to ask her for details yourself. Colin & Rab went off to Carnmore Crag. It's along way in, and they left quite late (as usual), so only had time for a quick route on Maiden Buttress on Saturday. They had taken sleeping bags etc and spent the night in the barn, as planned. It was well worth any discomfort though. On Sunday they climbed the magnificent Fionn Buttress. Both declared it the best route they've ever done. High praise indeed !

The promised ceilidh in the Dundonell Hotel failed to materialise, which meant an early(ish) night for those at the hut. They had now been joined by Anne & Mary, who went up a couple of the Fannaichs on Sunday. The rest spent a relatively relaxing day cragging in the sun at Jetty Crag. The bank holiday failed to live up to expectations on Monday - it rained & those who'd stayed up at the hut, came home.

Neil wasn't able to attend, which means I can simply make up the now traditional Presidential calumny. Here goes : Neil spent the whole weekend putting up tiles in his kitchen, and they were all squint. That should do it !
