3rd March 2006 - Milehouse The Skis of Fife ? As predicted as early as the week before by Andy, the weather was indeed cold at Milehouse. In fact the heaviest snows of the year made for a very wintery scene. Unfortunately Andy was unable to attend, but this was more than made up for by those that did. Ski touring seemed to be the order of the weekend, as the high avalanche forecast put folks off climbing. On Saturday, John K & Rab headed into Coire Cas, intending to go to Ben Macdui. Bad weather turned them back & they went to Cairngorm instead. Kevin & Sheila stayed lower down, skiing in Glen More. Dave, Lucy, Chris & Ken also headed up to Coire Cas, intending to do Ben Macdui, only to find the ski road closed, at 10am. The car parks were completely full. Instead they went to Glen Feshie and skied up Carn Ban Mor. A frankly astonishing amount of falling over ensued on the descent. One of Ken's skis ran away down the hill. To his disappointment he recovered this and was forced to continue the tortuous ski descent. Meanwhile John P had made it into Coire an t'Schneachda past the stranded helicopter. He assures us that he didn't remove any of it, but his rucksack was looking mighty heavy on his return ... Neil, Ronnie, Monica & Colin also went to Glen Feshie, intent on investigating some new climbing routes. Returning early and a little disappointed, they proceeded with some car decoration. Andrea, Jamie and Kath went for a walk around Loch an Eilean and built a wicked snow man on the lawn. On Sunday, John K was up and away early. Rab took on board the good reports from Carn Ban Mor, and decided to give that a try, on skis. Unfortunately, his blisters proved too bad. So he ditched the skis and walked up Gael Charn, on Sgor Goaith instead. He phoned Neil, Ronnie & Colin to let them know that he was now following their footprints, and would join them on their hill. Unfortunately, they were wading through deep snow Sgoran Dubh Mor, not Gael Charn, so they never did meet up ! John P went to walk up a hill near Laggan (?) Dave & Lucy went low level ski touring. The rest is a blur, it's hard to keep track of so many people ! Kevin & Sheila went somewhere and did something. And Lorna & Tara. Andrea, Jamie, Ken, Chris, Kath & Monica went sledging opposite Glenmore Lodge. It can be reported that it is possible to fit 4 adults on a single snowboard. And it goes extremely fast downhill if you do. Dave & Lucy pause to check which way to go |
