23rd June 2006 - Ling Hut, Torridon The Braes O'Edinburgh ? A fairly unpromising weather forecast, and the long drive, put most folks off this meet. It was left to the hardy Edinburgh contingent of Anne, Monica, Matt & Ken to see what was on offer. On the way up in the car, thoughts of "it might not be that bad" were spoiled by the unending rain. It wasn't looking good. Saturday dawned claggy, so a late start was in order. At about 2pm, Anne headed south to do Sgurr Ruadh, a hill that's more usually done from the Strathcarron side. Monica, Matt & Ken headed off to Liathach. Surprisingly, the weather got better & better as the day went on. The views over the back of Liathach were as awesome as ever. They ended up getting back to the hut about 8pm, in glorious sunshine. To be met by the hut goat. It's like Dr Doolittle in the BFMC sometimes ! This goat was not all friendly though, and head butted the returning mountaineers, before they beat a hasty retreat into the hut. Matt decided that he was made of sterner stuff, he found a red t-shirt and went back out for a game of "bull-fighting". The goat duly obliged. Stupid animal. The goat that is. Monica & Ken had a date with destiny on Central Buttress, Beinn Eighe, after last year's epic. They made a proper early start on Sunday. Made much faster progress on the climb (Piggot's route) Got past their high point from the year before, and got stuck somewhere else. It was looking a bit sticky for a while, but they abseiled back to the base of the final tower, found Hamilton's route, and made it to the top. Much joy & relief ensued, I can personally assure you !!! Anne & Matt went for a coastal walk at Diabeg. They went to the former Youth Hostel, now MBA bothy at Craig, and declared it very comfortable indeed. Then, sadly, it was off home.
