12th May 2006 - Glen Rosa Campsite, Arran

After all the sleeping in barns at the last meet, the obvious next step was to go camping at the picturesque, if basic, campsite at Glen Rosa. The hardship was reduced somewhat by the lack of midges and Dave's new awning for the camper van. This provided a very civilised communal drinking area.

Saturday dawned sunny and clear, and a good day was in prospect. Andy, Ken & Andrea headed off to do Sou'wester Slabs, followed by Dave & Lucy. After a while, Andrea decided to head back, meeting up with Keith & Jamie who had also walked up the glen. Well Keith walked, Jamie was carried most of the way ! After a slight false start ... Andy & Ken established themselves on the route, which is well worth the 4 stars it gets, great situations & the grippiest rock. Closely followed by Dave & Lucy, they got to the foot of the triple chimney pitch. There they met friends from Edinburgh, who were doing South Ridge Direct and back, in a day, from Edinburgh, using public transport. Top style ! The triple chimney pitch provided much entertainment, some grunting, and even a little swearing. Eventually everyone got up it (it's definitely the crux). Dave & Lucy called it a day soon after this, while Andy & Ken continued to the top of the Rosa Pinnacle. Meanwhile, Colin & Rab did Mosque (230m VS) on A'Chir, then the A'Chir Ridge. Everyone had a brilliant day.

On Sunday, being Arran, it rained. So most folks headed back on earlier ferries to dry their tents out. Dave & Lucy went for a run on Goatfell, to the top & back to the van in less than 2hrs. Ken give the suspension on his motorbike a good workout on the road around the island (not recommended !)

Due to the imminent addition to their family, Chris & Kath stayed at home. Not wanting to feel left out, however, Chris headed off to the "climbing Dad's" coffee morning, suitably attired (see pic). Here's hoping we see them back on the hill soon, for the sake of his sanity. Click pic for larger version - if you dare.
