Our Burns Supper this year was a well-attended meet at Braedownie Hut in Glen Clova.
We settled in on Friday evening, catching up around a roaring fire and planning on what might be possible the next day. With a poor forecast not inspiring many, Davy’s Bourach sounded like the most ambitious objective of the weekend!
On Saturday, Alex, Lucas, Cat (and Jura), Tim, Caroline, Jonny, Adam, Heather, Fiona, and Calum set off along the road with a plan of finding (and taking a break in) Davy’s Bourach. On reaching the bridge at the far end of Jocks Road, the idea of a warm fire and soup was enough to call it time to head home. The rest pushed on, and after some hunting, managed to uncover Davy’s Bourach. Literally! It took some digging.
Others surfaced a little later on, heading out for a walk, and Colin managed a run up to around 900m before thigh-deep snow slowed the pace.
Once everyone was back at the hut, a time was called, and preparations were made. Burns Supper was on. After peeling and boiling, wrapping and roasting, and mashing and mashing, the feast was prepared and all tucked in – but not before an honorary address to the Haggis by Calum Mack, with Colin’s ice axe for measure!
The celebrations didn’t stop at haggis, neeps, tatties and poetry, or the spread of incredible desserts that followed. We were all singing along and wishing Calum a Happy 60th Birthday! Somehow we managed to find the room for cake…
