Our February meet was a wintery one!
Mary and Cat headed up a day early and climbed the Corbet Sgurr nan Ceannaichean. The forecast had been grim all week but amazingly the pair didn’t get wet until the last leg on the bog-trot out. The snow was deep in parts and firms and windswept in others. On the summit, views were incredible and stretched out to the Sma Isles. The descent was filled with bum slides and icicle munching.
That night they were joined by Alex, Rab, Stephen and Ken. Alex had promised to bring a spare hot water bottle for Mary. You can imagine her disappointment when he neglected to bring the stopper! It’s a cold hut in winter but thankfully everyone brought enough coal to see the weekend through – and many weekends afterwards for the next clubs.
On Saturday, Cat, Alex and Ken climbed Maoll Cheann Dearg in incredible conditions.
Ken had purchased a toy that helped the others on the hill navigate on their descent. A snow duck maker! The group we met at the summit caught up with us as we were leaving the car park and noted their relief that they knew they must be going the right way because they could simply spot the ducks!
Stephen and Rab went searching for Corbetts but weren’t as lucky with the ground conditions (there was certainly significant avalanche risk on some aspects) and enjoyed an evening in the hut by the fire. The snow duck wasn’t quite such a fan of the fire though!
The short and unexpected weather window well and truly closed that night. Torrential rain and impressive snowmelt put everyone off the hills and the walk out from the hut was interesting. The river had burst its banks making the boardwalk like a giant bridge! The photos of the hut were taken Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. It was definitely a breakfast at the Midge Bite before a drive home Sunday!
